What kind of activities could I organise for elderly people?
I’ve been put in charge with organising activities for about 40 elderly people at a home. I have a few ideas like bingo, taking them on walks, shopping and board games etc. Just wondering if these are ok and what other kind of thing should I do?
Ta
Why not ask THEM. People do not become infantile or ga-ga just because they pass 70 or whatever.
Do not, whatever you do, patronise them
what about a self defense class, elderly people nee dto know how to defend themselves. Also what about some baking classes? religious speakers, planting workshop, they like that stuff
i miss my grandparents…
Have them paint each other’s nails.
Have a nice tea for them. How old are they? Crafts are good like painting and puzzles are good. If they are ambulatory then some dancing. Music with musicians.
Hi, I also do a bit of care work for the elderly and i think all your idea’s will go down a treat. One suggestion is buying a large inflaterble ball (I used the kind ment for excersise or a pregnant woman) the old folks loved rolling it about. We also have people bring in their pets (and babys!) for petting days.
You could have a pets day & have therapy dogs come visit or pets in training to do visits? Hav a nursery schl visit ? Can U take them for countryside rides?? Or take them to ball games in the park? Crafts?
you could do some gentle stretches to music- helps keep the elderly a bit more flexible. a singsong can be fun too- especially if anyone has had a stroke- sometimes they can’t speak but can sing songs from 60 years ago! remember that most of them ( presumably) are still in complete control of their faculties
Go to your local library and pick up all the leaflets you can on places to go and see like stately homes ect so that you can put them in a file and then you have a good rage of places for them to go too.
many like art and craft such as drawing, painting, sticking, knitting, crochet.
reading so magazines and books.
Bingo some love that with little prizes.
Do any schools or churches come out and sing to them.
Films you could ask what is there fav and get them out on DVD for them some real good old fashioned black and white ones.
Do they have a piano in the home and can some play it for others.
jigsaws.
My mom loves puzzel books word searches.
Why dont you do a questionaire and list different activites and then get them to tick which ones they want to do and final ask for suggestions after all they may be old but trust me the mind for many is still young.
white water rafting
golden oldies nite where they can dress up as their favourite old film star;
Arts and crafts, dancing, bowls, wheelchair race, karaoke, visit aquarium / wildlife park / petting zoo, card games, open mic poetry recital.
Keep them involved and active, let them have input. Let their inner child emerge and they won’t age while they’re engaged in your activities.
what about a band and some old time ball room dancing
Tai Chi instruction great for old people with the slow movements
my mum is in her 70s and she does yoga once a week.
Crafts, painting pottery, stretching, healthy lifestyle classes, nutrition classes, schedule a speaker to come in regarding a specific topic.
why not a singalong,or dancing, give prizes 4 the best.fancy dress party with punch etc.?because we are the elder generation does not mean we are fragile or weak.we love a good time too.i suggest you ask the people who r involved and find out what they say,as you are doing it for them.
Show them Yahoo Answers and with all that experience they could give out a bit of advice. You read out the juicy ones and they get to pass comment. That’s been my experience of what old people really like. And a bit of felching and rimming obviously.
elderly people are just the same as anyone else only they have wrinkles. get the local school to send a choir, dominoes. pub quiz some of them may like a pint. Or a tea dance.
I am elderly, I go once a week for a gentle exercise group, sitting down stretching exercises, attendance is regular, about 22 altogether, more will come if there is room we sit down afterword have teas etc. it is one of the popular group in this centre, also a reminiscence group may also be useful, we sometime go to outings, health check etc
One of my mother-in-laws’ favorite events is the weekly movie with popcorn and lemonade. An old movie is shown, often a musical).
Why is it that when people reach a certain age that other people believe that they suddenly become interested in Knitting, Dominoes, Cards, Ballroom Dances, Painting, Golden Oldies, Singalongs, urrrr and many many other equally boaring pastimes.
We still have a life you know.
Why do you not ask those in their later years what they would like to do – offer them Parachuting, Bungy Jumping, Rally Driving, Football, or any other passtime that YOU do not think they would be interested in.
