My friends worked until the following ages: Ramona 77, Normard 82, Sol 84, Virginia 72, Robert 70. None of these people had to work, they worked because they enjoyed it.

I would assume that they cannot afford to retire and must continue to work

If we talk about people who will retire or are retired having to work to supplement their retirement income all too many were under the illusion that Social Security would pay their way. Several had obligations which made it impossible for them to save for their retirement. But others never saved when they had the opportunity and the income. Nice houses, good schooling for the kids, great vacations and very few pennies squirreled away. For those who had problems and now must work to put food on the table and gas in the tank there is sorrow. For those who lived life ” high on the hog” and provided nothing toward their retirement I have little feeling.

I am often sad to see the elderly forced to work ..
Many elderly do not need to work but they work
anyway because they enjoy it.

I think it is an ok idea as long as they are able. I work for my dad who is a will and estate lawyer. He has had a secretary who does bills for him for 25 years and she is 76 (looks like she is 50 though.) She works for him part time (2 days a week) and seems to enjoy it. In this situation I am for the ‘elderly’ working after retirement age. What breaks my heart is to see some older people working so they can put food on their table and pay for their medications when they are in pain. Yes, I do agree a lot of elderly working in the blue collar industry are not treated that well (in America)

some can’t work due to health issues . in australia the government gives seniors who work past their retirement age a substantial amount of money for each year they keep working .it needs to be applied for and the top is 5 years .the amount increases each year.

I just retired and moved 1,500 miles. As soon as I get everything in order, next spring I’m planning on getting a part-time job for something to do. If Obama gets elected for sure I’m going to have to increase my income.

If my parents are any indication, many of them can’t, they have too many health problems. They earned their rest and health benefits. Government should take care of them.

You handle your finances to provide for your retirement years or you just keep on working until you drop. It is an individual choice for everyone. A thinking person will plan for their expenses in their advanced years. A lot of people seem live on the old WWII premise, “Live for today for tomorrow we may die.” It doesn’t work over the long haul.
