How do you feeling elderly working at their retirement age?

Recently in the Singapore society, there are more and more elderly working in the blue collar industry and they are usually treated unfairly(pay, benefits etc). I would like to gather responds about elderly working at their retirement age.

I dont think it is fair that older people should have to work since they have probably worked their whole life and now they cannot enjoy their reitred life. However, in today’s economy it is becoming necessary for the elderly to work and keep up with the cost of living. And even many young people with good paying jobs have to work overtime or get a second job (in addition to their current one) just to make ends meet.

Singapore should have some law that treats the elderly in the same manner that other workers are treated. I thought Singapore was very strict about culture, cleanliness and such. Should they not implement a law to protect their citizens.

And also I am not sure if this applies but in Singapore don’t the sons and daughters take care of the elderly parents?

    personal choice. nobody else’s business.

I think it is a shame that many people in their 70’s MUST work. These are people who have homes that are paid for and grown children. But they must work just to keep property taxes paid and car insurance.

It is definately not fair. As you get older and the people around you that begin working are younger and younger, it is difficult to “fit in”. You retain your work ethic, while younger workers seem to think that if they just show up for work they should get paid. They call in all the time and seem to feel no loyalty to their employer or co workers. The older you get the harder it is. Not necessarily physically, but mentally to cope with the work place. After paying for social security for over 40 years, you have a right to retire.

if they can and want to, more power to them. the situation you refer to sounds more like economic slavery. in the US retirement is an ever shrinking option to a growing number of people of “retirement” age. i also think it is part of the deal if you raise children that they should help their parents in their later years. if they have been raised to do that , they will be able to hope for help in their old age.

I’m in the US. some people here want to work after retirement age & are forced out. Others want to retire & can’t due to their finances.

If they choose to why not. I am glad that I don’t have to work myself.

You handle your finances to provide for your retirement years or you just keep on working until you drop. It is an individual choice for everyone. A thinking person will plan for their expenses in their advanced years. A lot of people seem live on the old WWII premise, “Live for today for tomorrow we may die.” It doesn’t work over the long haul.

If my parents are any indication, many of them can’t, they have too many health problems. They earned their rest and health benefits. Government should take care of them.

I just retired and moved 1,500 miles. As soon as I get everything in order, next spring I’m planning on getting a part-time job for something to do. If Obama gets elected for sure I’m going to have to increase my income.

some can’t work due to health issues . in australia the government gives seniors who work past their retirement age a substantial amount of money for each year they keep working .it needs to be applied for and the top is 5 years .the amount increases each year.

I think it is an ok idea as long as they are able. I work for my dad who is a will and estate lawyer. He has had a secretary who does bills for him for 25 years and she is 76 (looks like she is 50 though.) She works for him part time (2 days a week) and seems to enjoy it. In this situation I am for the ‘elderly’ working after retirement age. What breaks my heart is to see some older people working so they can put food on their table and pay for their medications when they are in pain. Yes, I do agree a lot of elderly working in the blue collar industry are not treated that well (in America)

I am often sad to see the elderly forced to work ..
Many elderly do not need to work but they work
    anyway because they enjoy it.

It’s better than sitting around the house

If we talk about people who will retire or are retired having to work to supplement their retirement income all too many were under the illusion that Social Security would pay their way. Several had obligations which made it impossible for them to save for their retirement. But others never saved when they had the opportunity and the income. Nice houses, good schooling for the kids, great vacations and very few pennies squirreled away. For those who had problems and now must work to put food on the table and gas in the tank there is sorrow. For those who lived life ” high on the hog” and provided nothing toward their retirement I have little feeling.

    Mixed.

I would assume that they cannot afford to retire and must continue to work

My friends worked until the following ages: Ramona 77, Normard 82, Sol 84, Virginia 72, Robert 70. None of these people had to work, they worked because they enjoyed it.
