How do I start building my references working with the elderly?

Im a 43 year old single mother that has been working with kids all my life. I want to start being a caregiver/companion for the elderly but I havent any expereince with that age group? I see ads in the paper, but they want experienced people. Im thinking of working in a nursing home to start off but I dont know what kind of position to start off with? any advice?

Nursing homes will help you get a cna license. That will also help you to become more marketable. I got many referrals through my church.

I work as a diversional therapist (i think they’re called recreation therapist in the us) in an aged care facility in australia. we’re always looking for volunteers. diversional therapists co-ordinate the leisure in a facility – eg. facilitate the bowls or the craft or the cooking or the bingo as well as co-ordinate volunteers and provide one on one therapies eg massage etc. maybe if you had a couple of free hours once a week or fortnight or so, you could ring a local nursing home and ask to speak to the activities co-ordinator? they’d be only too happy to recruit a new volunteer, i’m sure. and you could take the kids too. old people love kids.
